WHAT IS CAPOEIRA?

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form that was developed by Afro-descended slaves in Brasil over 400 years ago! Originally it developed as a martial art hidden as a dance, however today it is so much more.

Capoeira is best described as a game between two participants, where they use Martial arts, Dance, Acrobatics, Cunning and wit to try and outplay one another, whilst maintaining a smooth flow.

In class we train various movements to try and incorporate them into the game. We practice kicks, dodges, acrobatics and sequences to learn how to combine these things. All the while we’re trying to learn some musical instruments, history of the art, and the Portuguese language.

Fortunately, we have an incredible community of teachers, experienced students, and beginner students who are all encouraging and willing to help you become better every day!

CAPOEIRA CORK

Professor Curioso started training Capoeira with Mestre Bola in 2000 in Toronto, Canada. Before coming to Cork, he had run various classes in Canada, and taught workshops around the world. Bringing this experience with him, Curioso moved to Ireland in 2010. Although Capoeira existed here in Cork, he wanted to train in the ways he was taught, and felt he had a lot to offer. Professor Curioso brings with him over 20 years of experience, training, teaching, travelling, performing and organizing events.

Professor Curioso originally established a small Capoeira in Cork City in 2012, however due to several factors the group only lasted about a year. After a trip to Brazil, Curioso came back to Cork, and was re-inspired to start a group in 2014, with the help of two very enthusiastic friends and students. From there the group has grown exponentially, and went from 2 Adults classes per week, to a school that now has 9 weekly classes and a monthly Roda, 6 coaches, and has classes for Toddlers, Kids, Teens and Adults of all ages!

EVENTS & CORDAS (BELTS)

Capoeira today is a global community that is thriving. It’s influence can be found all over the place, in movies, pop music, dance, and in the growing phenomena that is known as “Movement Culture”.

Although we don’t have competitions per se (they do exist, but are not very popular), events & travel are a big part of a Capoeirista’s life. We encourage all our students to go to big events around Ireland, Europe and the World, in order to further explore this art, learn new techniques and enjoy practicing with like minded individuals.

We also organize a few events a year ourselves including workshops, Roda’s an annual Batizado & Troca De Corda. This event is where we bring together Capoeira teachers from Ireland and Internationally to teach a weekend of classes, play in Rodas, and celebrate the students accomplishments over the year. It’s also where the students get graded and receive their first Corda (belt) or exchange their current level for the next.

COMMUNITY

At our foundation we are very much a community oriented organization. We strongly believe in fostering a positive & encouraging environment, where all members help one another. A big part of learning is to learn from your peers as well as from a teacher.

We are also there to encourage one another and have fun while still training hard! It very much takes from the philosophy that working out with your friends is far better and more motivating than working out alone. This makes Capoeira so much more than a just a fitness class.

This philosophy of a positive environment, with community input is the last piece of the puzzle that makes Capoeira complete, and good for the mind, body and soul.
